when i put https in the backend - /backend/settings/system-urls -- the page stays blank white :--) pls advice

Have you created and written the htaccess rules?

This means most likely that PHP isn't even executed and something happens before, so i'd look in the web server logs to see if i spot any issue. If you have mod_security enabled on your host, maybe disable it.
