Most likely you have to adjust your import settings from Backend > Settings > Import/Export and lower down the numbers.

It would be good to improve the import process via the web, with these options:
1st csv header mapping with custom field
2º show unvalidated emails and allow to modify it directly and retry importation. Or simply allow copying these columns to modify them and reimport them with the import text
With these options would save a lot of time
