tracking url issue

Something odd is happening to my cname record.
my MW website is newsletter.tld at dedicated ip 11.22.33.44
my tracking domain is trk.newsletter.tld
When I create a cname record to point trk.newsletter.tld to 11.22.33.44, i get a server error.
But when I create a cname record to point trk.newsletter.tld to newsletter.tld, it works, but the url that displays is 11.22.33.44/index.php/...

How come this is happening?
 
Bad server configuration i assume.
CNAME can oly point to a hostname. If you wnat it to point to an IP that's a subdomain.
